The VanCougar is Hiring

Will you be a student at WSUV in the 2007-2008 school year?

Do you love writing, photography, graphic design, or marketing?

Apply for a job at The VanCougar!

We are seeking people for the following jobs:

Freelance Writer
Photographer
Layout Assistant
Advertising Manager

All of these jobs are paid except for the position of layout assistant, for which you can earn academic credit.

It's easy to apply! Just stop by our office in VCLS 212 and get an application from the envelope on the window. Fill it out and attach a sample of your work, and then turn it in.

If you are applying to be a freelance writer, attach a sample of any writing you've recently done. If you are applying to be a photographer, attach a photo. For the other positions, attach relevant material if you have some available, like a graphic design you have done or a sample of business or marketing work. (If you don't have relevant material for these two positions, attach a writing sample.)

No experience is required--just an interest in learning and a willingness to try something new.

Paying for a 16 page college newspaper? Get a clue.

For one thing, how are you going to implement this?

Second, why on earth would I pay for this paper when I can pick up the NEW YORK TIMES, THE COLUMBIAN, and USA TODAY for free?

I have to tell you, you are flying in the face of all that a paper like this stands for.

If you're having budget issues, cut down your length (this way your photos won't have to take up half the page).

Honestly, how much research has gone into a decision such as this? How many college newspapers of similar size and stature are charging a fee?

How do you expect to maintain readership numbers? The "pass on" rate of this paper is already big for this campus. Come on guys. Make smart decisions.

Brian,

I'm told that in the past, the VanCougar has had problems with people trashing issues. I believe the rationale behind the 'all other copies $.25' text was to assign an actual monetary value to copies of the paper, should the staff decide to pursue any action against persons responsible for trashing issues.

I believe the paper reads, 'first copy free', or something to that effect. I can't imagine why someone might want more than one issue per printing cycle. Unless that person were building a collection, of course. I think I would approve of collections of the VanCougar.

I really apologize for the confusion, and I hope this explanation has cleared everything up.

Schlosser is right. He knows what he's talking about. No one wants to pay for the Vancougar. He's right about all the huge pictures and blank space. Anyone who's read for a while can see the difference this year.

If Mark "Chimmy Chunga" Medina or some other moron just like him wants to throw away a load of your papers, that's his crime. We don't want to pay for it.

Putting a face value on the paper is pointless, since according to your recent editorial no one here can afford to pay anyway! Implementation of a fee for the paper (which we ALREADY pay for) is costly in itself.

Does anyone care why Mr. Medina trashed those papers? Were any of you even at WSUV when that happened? Get over yourselves; that is not the issue.

I love Schlosser and used to write for the paper. Please listen to him people! Charging for the VanCougar is a ridiculous idea. I think the new editor should take a cue as to how the paper used to be run...
