VanCougar Survey and Campus Construction

Hello, everyone! I hope that you are having a good new school year. I'm Rose Hart, your new managing editor. In the first issue of the school year, we had a survey about The VanCougar. You can also answer the questions in it right here on our blog.

How often do you read The VanCougar?

How much of The VanCougar do you read?

Are the articles in The VanCougar usually on a subject that interests you?

Do you read The VanCougar more than, less than, or the same as you did in the past?

Overall, what do you think of The VanCougar?

On another note, what are your thoughts on construction on campus? Where do you see the campus a few year from now?

1.How often do you read The VanCougar?

I look at every issue.

2.How much of The VanCougar do you read?

Most of it.

3. Are the articles in The VanCougar usually on a subject that interests you?

Only occasionally. I think you need to extend your focus beyond the boundaries of the campus and into the local community more. Not one word on the possible casino problem just north of campus. How will that affect WSU students? Write about Gloria Hall. Talk to her friends, church, family, etc. How about a story on the career center (or the lack thereof). Have you seen the jobs advertised through our "career center"? They're great if you want to move to Butte, MT or Kansas City, MO. Why hasn't the campus developed closer ties to local employers? You'd be better off at Clark College's career center.

My point is there are plenty of pressing issues to write about that affect WSU students that extend beyond our doors. Isn't the point of a University to send us off into the "real world"? Why not get in touch with it? Or, you can just keep writing about dogs crapping in our fields off a leash.

4. Do you read The VanCougar more than, less than, or the same as you did in the past?

Not sure what the point of this question is. I look at the paper years ago, I still look at it now.

5. Overall, what do you think of The VanCougar?

Honestly, I think the views expressed by the editors and the subject matter of many stories reflects a narrow view not shared by many WSU students.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. We really appreciate it. To anonymous, I would say, if you have a different opinion than what is expressed in the paper, you should go ahead and send in a letter to the editor. We publish all letters to the editor that are signed.
Best,
Rose Hart
Managing Editor

By the way, there will be an article about Gloria Hall (as well as about Emma Koenig, another WSUV student who tragically died in a car crash) in issue #4. We are hoping to cover tragic happenings like this in the future, as sensitively and respectfully as possible.

My thoughts on the VanCougar...

- It needs to be edited more carefully--errors will happen, but they shouldn't happen as often as they do in the VanCougar.

- The website is horrible. Issues should be posted in a format besides PDF.
