I wrote about not knowing what to write about; largely, it was designed to be humorous, if anything. As well, it was the first column written to broach the subject of not knowing what to write about. The columns, if you ask me, reflect a variety of subjects. I am sure, however, that we could always do things differently; if you have an opinion to share on the opinions page, I invite you to send us a letter -- you can even do so at www.VanCougar.com.
Media consolidation? Explain, please.
Our articles are indeed written by the same reporters. They are on our staff. I am not sure where you are going with this.
I understand your complaints about the advertising but don't draw the same conclusions in certain areas; still, I appreciate the vigor with which you obviously read and analyze my newspaper.
Thanks for the positive feedback on the look of the newspaper.
If you would like to contibute -- you know, get the diversity in there -- feel free to take an application off the door of the office or stop in and apply one day. We are always hiring new writers eager to contribute.
Let's make this blog something where we accomplish something and make it part of the solution, instead of just throwing spitballs from the back of the rooom.
If you have a problem with The VanCougar, let's work together to improve it. Let's make this an even better newspaper, even with all the strides we've made this year.
If you have a problem with the blog, tell me how I can make it better. Tell me how we can make this a community where we can thoughtfully express ideas and discourse.
I want to see this blog and the newspaper improve; I just hope I am not alone in my goals.
Okay, okay. I have to laugh at the obvious amount of commodified stock answers here. How many of you thought more than a few hours or minutes about your answers?
As far as the "superficial elements" of the paper, well this is where you show your naivete in both the real and existensial arenas Mr. Existentialman. A paper's conveyance of information is not merely based upon what words are printed, but in the way it presents the info as well.
Diversity among reporters? I have one question for you...how many reporters can you get for a newspaper that serves a student population of roughly 2000? The diversity of reporting is a responsibility that falls alrgely on students like you who believe it is necessary within the media. However, I have yet to see you writing...put your money where your mouth is, and show us how to do this better. Hell, applications are open for editorial positions next year. But I'm taking a wild stab in the dark here...you probably don't have the experience, right? That would mean you have to start at the bottom like everyone else, and then, guess what? You would learn something before spouting idiosyncratic prepared answers that you think are "really gettin' em." Do us all a favor. Stop watching trendy news shows and making decisions on subjects you literally don't know anything about.
Christiangurl. I don't even know where to start. I guess anywhere is as good as any. About the abortion thing: I have one question...do you support socialized healthcare?
Oh yeah, and one other thing. If the editors were trying to control you, they would be erasing your comments, or censoring you in other ways. And as far as advertising, anyone can buy a space, even in The New York Times. Before you make such uninformed decisions on advertising, check out advertising policies first.
This blog is hopping now. Terrific job everyone, even if the environment is a bit stifling at times.
Did Dean really make that joke? I think you're right---if Trent Lott or Karl Rove had said something like that, it would be headlines! Off with his head, people would shout!
I don't think its the last time Dean will stick his foot in his mouth. I just wonder if he'll still be the chair when he comes to speak here.
Keep up the antagonism everyone. And don't let the bastards get you down!
I just saw the layout for the first time today.. it looks fine. I have been kind of wanting to let someone at the paper know that I see a lot of improvement from last year, in terms of content. The paper last year literally used to piss me off because much of it was so vapid and meaningless, not to mention riddled with typos, misspellings, and other errors. I actually see these types of issues coming up as a good thing (free speech, etc.) because while we may not all be handling it in an optimal manner, at least they are on the table, rather than the editor's girlfriend's problems with her cat or something. What goes into the paper seems much more well thought out and aware of what students might be interested in and want to hear about. Just wanted to let you know it's noticed and appreciated.
(still a few grammar and spelling errors here and there, though...)
